About Turkish Old Lira Exchange

The Turkish Old Lira (TRL) was the official currency of Turkey from 1923 until it was replaced by the new Turkish Lira (TRY) in 2005. The Old Lira was subject to significant inflation, particularly in the 1990s, leading to the introduction of the new lira, which aimed to stabilise the currency and restore public confidence in the financial system. The term “lira” itself is derived from the Italian word for “pound,” reflecting historical currency influences in the region.

The Turkish Old Lira was subdivided into 100 kuruş, and the currency was issued in both coins and banknotes. Coins were available in denominations ranging from 1 kuruş to 1 lira, while banknotes were issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 lira.
The designs on Turkish Old Lira banknotes featured important national figures, cultural symbols, and historical landmarks, including images of Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey.

During the period of the Old Lira, Turkey experienced economic challenges, including high inflation and currency devaluation. The government implemented various measures to address these issues, but the situation ultimately led to the need for a new currency.
The introduction of the new lira in 2005 was part of a broader economic reform agenda aimed at stabilising the Turkish economy and promoting growth.

In conclusion, the Turkish Old Lira was an important part of Turkey’s financial history, reflecting both the country’s struggles with inflation and its eventual transition to a more stable economic system. It was replaced by the new Turkish Lira in 2005, marking a significant turning point in Turkey’s economic modernisation.
