About Japanese Yen Exchange

The Japanese Yen (JPY) is the official currency of Japan and one of the most widely traded currencies in the global foreign exchange market. We accept all denominations of Japanese Yen banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Japanese Yen Banknotes

The current series of Japanese Yen banknotes features beautifully detailed designs celebrating Japan’s cultural and historical heritage, with advanced security features including holograms, colour-shifting ink, and microprinting. We accept all current denominations, including the ¥10,000 note and the ¥1,000 note, as well as everything in between. Worth noting is the ¥2,000 note, a genuine rarity that many exchanges overlook — we accept it at our standard current-series rate.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we buy withdrawn Japanese Yen banknotes, including historic issues such as the ¥10,000 note issued in 1958 and earlier pieces such as the ¥1 banknote first issued in 1885. We also accept damaged notes, provided they remain at least 50% intact. The rate offered for old and damaged notes is slightly lower than for current series, but it is usually the only realistic way to convert them into sterling.

Japanese Yen Coins

We accept all circulating Japanese Yen coin denominations, including the ¥500 coin and the ¥100 coin, as well as the smaller denominations right down to the ¥1 piece. Most UK banks and travel money services refuse foreign coins altogether, so sending yours to us is often the only practical option. Rates for coins are slightly lower than for banknotes due to the additional handling involved.

Japanese Yen Exchange FAQ

Do you accept the ¥2,000 note? I've heard it's very rare.

Yes! The ¥2,000 note is genuinely uncommon — it was issued in 2000 to mark the G8 summit held in Okinawa and the new millennium, and it never entered widespread everyday circulation in Japan. We accept it at the same rate as other current-series banknotes, so it is well worth including if you have one.

I have some very old Japanese Yen banknotes — will you still buy them?

Yes, we buy a range of withdrawn Japanese Yen notes, including some issued as far back as the late 19th century. The exchange rate will be slightly lower than for current-series notes, but sending them in is far more practical than trying to exchange them on the high street. If we are unable to make you an offer on any note, we will return it to you free of charge.

Can I exchange Japanese Yen coins as well as banknotes?

Yes, we accept all circulating Japanese Yen coin denominations, from the modest 1 yen piece up to the 500 yen coin. Most UK banks and travel money bureaux won’t touch foreign coins, so we are often the most straightforward option for converting leftover change brought back from a trip to Japan.

How do I send my Japanese Yen to you, and when will I receive payment?

Once your Yen arrives and we’ve verified the currency, we’ll pay you within 5 working days by bank transfer or PayPal — whichever you prefer. Is the Japanese Yen easy to exchange in the UK, or is a specialist service better?

Current Japanese Yen banknotes are a major global currency, so most UK banks and travel money services will exchange them without difficulty.
