Albanian Leke Banknotes & Coins We Accept

To exchange your Albanian Leke for cash, select the coins or banknotes you want to add to your account below.

About Albanian Leke Exchange

The Albanian Lek (ALL) is the official currency of Albania, first introduced in 1926 and still in use today. We accept all denominations of Albanian Leke banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Albanian Leke Banknotes

The Bank of Albania’s current banknote series celebrates the country’s history through striking portraits of national figures. Higher-value notes such as the 5,000 Lek note featuring Skanderbeg and the 2,000 Lek note featuring Gentius are among the most frequently exchanged. All denominations from 200 to 5,000 Lek are accepted, and notes do not need to be in perfect condition.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we buy withdrawn Albanian Leke banknotes, including notes from the 1992 Lek Valutë series such as the 50 Lek Valutë, as well as earlier issues like the 1,000 Lek Skanderbeg note issued in 1992. Damaged notes are also accepted provided they remain at least 50% intact, though the rate applied will be slightly lower than for notes in good condition.

Albanian Leke Coins

We accept current Albanian Leke coins, including the 100 Leke coin and the 50 Leke coin, which most UK bureaux de change will refuse outright. Coins attract a slightly lower rate than banknotes due to handling costs, but you will still receive a fair return rather than being left with loose change you cannot spend. If you also have other Balkan currencies to exchange, we handle Macedonian Denari and Serbian Dinara too.

Albanian Leke Exchange FAQ

Can I exchange old Albanian Leke banknotes from the 1992 Lek Valutë series?

Yes! We accept withdrawn Albanian Leke banknotes including notes from the 1992 Lek Valutë series, which were issued shortly after the fall of communism and have since been replaced. Unlike most high street exchanges, we buy these older notes at a competitive rate so you won’t be left out of pocket.

Do you accept damaged or torn Albanian Leke notes?

Yes, we do accept damaged Albanian Leke banknotes as long as they are at least 50% intact. The exchange rate for damaged notes will be slightly lower than for notes in good condition, but you will still receive a fair return rather than being left with worthless currency.

Can I send Albanian Leke coins as well as banknotes?

Yes, we accept current Albanian Leke coins including the 20, 50, and 100 Leke denominations. Please be aware that coins attract a slightly lower rate than banknotes due to handling costs, but we are happy to exchange them when most other services refuse.

Is the Albanian Lek difficult to exchange in the UK?

Yes, most UK high street banks and bureaux de change will not exchange Albanian Leke, as it is considered an exotic currency with limited demand. That is exactly why we specialise in currencies like this — so you are never stuck with leftover holiday money from Tirana or the Albanian Riviera gathering dust in a drawer.

Will Albania ever replace the Lek with the Euro?

Albania has ambitions to join the European Union, but there are currently no confirmed plans or timescale to replace the Lek with the Euro. For now, the Lek remains the country’s official currency, and current banknotes and coins are fully exchangeable with us.
