About Egyptian Pounds Exchange

The Egyptian Pound (EGP) is the official currency of Egypt and has been in circulation since 1834, making it one of the oldest currencies in North Africa and the Middle East. We accept all denominations of Egyptian Pound banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Egyptian Pound Banknotes

Current Egyptian Pound banknotes feature iconic imagery including ancient landmarks such as the Sphinx and the Pyramids of Giza, and incorporate modern security features such as watermarks, security threads, and colour-shifting ink. We accept the full range of denominations in circulation, including the 200 EGP note and the 100 EGP note, as well as smaller denominations such as the 50, 20, 10, 5, and 1 pound notes. If you have returned from Cairo, Luxor, or the Red Sea resorts with leftover notes, we make it straightforward to convert them.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we accept withdrawn Egyptian Pound banknotes that are no longer legal tender in Egypt, including older issues such as the 100 EGP note issued in 1978 and the 10 EGP note issued in 1970. We also accept damaged notes, provided they are at least 50% intact. Rates for old and damaged notes are slightly lower than for current series, but we will always make you a clear offer before any commitment.

Egyptian Pound Coins

We accept Egyptian Pound coins, including the 50 piastres coin and the 1 Egyptian pound coin. The Egyptian Pound is subdivided into 100 piastres, and coins are commonly brought back by holidaymakers alongside their banknotes. Exchange rates for coins are slightly lower than for notes due to handling costs, but you are welcome to include them in the same parcel as your banknotes.

Can I exchange Egyptian Pounds I brought back from a holiday to Luxor or the Red Sea?

Yes, absolutely. Egyptian Pounds are one of the most commonly returned holiday currencies we receive, particularly from travellers who have visited Cairo, Luxor, or the Red Sea resorts. Simply box up your notes and coins, post them to us, and we will verify everything and pay you within 5 working days by bank transfer or PayPal.

Do you accept Egyptian piastre coins as well as pound notes?

Yes, we do. The Egyptian Pound is subdivided into 100 piastres, and we accept coins including the 50 piastres and 1 pound denominations. Rates for coins are slightly lower than for banknotes due to handling costs, but you are welcome to include them with any notes you are sending.

I have some old Egyptian banknotes from the 1970s — can I still exchange them?

Yes. We accept a range of withdrawn Egyptian Pound banknotes, including older issues such as the 100 EGP note issued in 1978 and the 10 EGP note issued in 1970. These are no longer legal tender in Egypt, but as long as your notes are at least 50% intact, we can exchange them at a slightly reduced rate.

Will a UK bank exchange my leftover Egyptian Pounds?

Most UK high street banks will not exchange Egyptian Pounds, as the EGP is not widely traded through mainstream UK banking channels. We specialise in exactly this type of currency and can exchange both current and withdrawn Egyptian Pound notes and coins — including denominations and series that other services routinely turn away.
