About Turkish Lira Exchange
The Turkish Lira (TRY) is the official currency of Turkey and Northern Cyprus, introduced in its current form in 2005 as part of a major economic reform programme. We accept all denominations of Turkish Lira banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.
Current Turkish Lira Banknotes
The current series of Turkish Lira banknotes, issued from 2009 onwards, features portraits of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk alongside depictions of Turkey’s cultural and historical landmarks. We exchange all denominations from this series, including the 200 Lira and 100 Lira notes, as well as smaller denominations such as the 5 Lira — all are welcome.
Old Series & Damaged Notes
Unlike most high street exchanges, we accept withdrawn Turkish Lira banknotes, including the 2005 New Turkish Lira series that was phased out when the currency was rebranded in 2009. This includes notes such as the 100 New Lira and the 50 New Lira, across the full range of that series. We also accept damaged notes, provided they are at least 50% intact, though the rate offered will be slightly lower than for undamaged currency. If you have pre-2005 banknotes, these fall under our separate Turkish Old Lira category.
Turkish Lira Coins
We accept Turkish Lira coins from the current series, including the 1 Lira coin and smaller kuruş denominations such as the 50 Kuruş and 25 Kuruş. Most banks and bureaux de change refuse coins outright, so rather than leaving them at the back of a drawer, send them along with your banknotes. The rate for coins is slightly lower than for notes, reflecting the additional handling involved.
