The Pound Sterling (GBP) is the official currency of the United Kingdom and one of the oldest currencies in continuous use, with a history stretching back over 1,200 years. We accept all denominations of British pound banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current British Pound Banknotes

The current Bank of England polymer series is among the most secure ever issued, featuring holographic foil patches, see-through windows, and raised print that can be felt by touch. All current banknotes are accepted, including the £10 Jane Austen note and the £50 Boulton and Watt note, along with every other denomination in the current series.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike many exchanges, we accept a wide range of withdrawn Bank of England banknotes, including paper notes that are no longer legal tender. Older notes such as the £5 Elizabeth Fry note and the £20 Sir Edward Elgar note are all considered, as are damaged or torn notes provided they are at least 50% intact. Rates for withdrawn or damaged notes are slightly lower to reflect the additional verification involved.

British Pound Coins

We accept the full range of current decimal coins, including the 12-sided £1 coin and the 50p coin, as well as older pre-decimal coins such as the half-crown and the sixpence. Exchange rates for coins are slightly lower than for banknotes due to the additional handling costs involved.

Do you accept old paper Bank of England banknotes that are no longer legal tender?

Yes, we do. The Bank of England withdrew its paper £5 and £10 notes when polymer replacements were introduced, and while the Bank of England itself will still exchange some of these directly, many exchanges and banks will not. We accept a wide range of withdrawn paper Bank of England notes at a slightly adjusted rate.

I have pre-decimal British coins — shillings, sixpences, and half-crowns. Can I exchange these?

Yes! We accept a wide range of pre-decimal British coins, including shillings, sixpences, half-crowns, and old pennies. These coins ceased to be legal tender when the UK converted to decimal currency in 1971, but we can still exchange them for you at an agreed rate.

What is the difference between a Bank of England note and a Scottish or Northern Irish pound note?

Bank of England notes are issued by the central bank and are the standard notes used across England and Wales. Scottish and Northern Irish pound notes are issued by commercial banks such as the Royal Bank of Scotland or Ulster Bank, and while they have the same face value, they are technically not legal tender in England. We exchange Bank of England notes on this page — if you have Scottish or Northern Irish notes, you can find those on our Scottish Pounds and Northern Irish Pounds pages.

Can I exchange a damaged or torn British pound banknote?

Yes, provided the note is at least 50% intact we can exchange it. Damaged notes are accepted at a slightly lower rate than undamaged ones to account for the additional verification required. If you are unsure whether your note qualifies, feel free to contact us before sending.

How do I send my British pound notes and coins to you, and how quickly will I be paid?

Simply box up your currency securely and post it to us yourself using a tracked or insured postal service of your choice. Once we receive it, we will verify the currency and process payment within 5 working days via bank transfer or PayPal. If for any reason you are unhappy with the offer we make, we will return your currency to you free of charge.
