American Dollars Banknotes & Coins We Accept

To exchange your American Dollars for cash, select the coins or banknotes you want to add to your account below.

About American Dollar Exchange

The United States Dollar (USD) is the official currency of the United States and the world’s most widely traded reserve currency. We accept all denominations of US Dollar banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current US Dollar Banknotes

Modern US Dollar banknotes feature a range of sophisticated security elements, including colour-shifting ink, 3D security ribbons, and embedded watermarks. We accept all current denominations, including the $100 note and the $50 note, as well as every smaller denomination in circulation.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we also accept older US Dollar banknotes and damaged notes. One of the more unusual aspects of the Dollar is that the US Federal Reserve has never demonetised older designs — they remain legal tender regardless of how old they look. At least 50% of a note must be intact for us to accept it, and a slightly reduced rate may apply to heavily worn examples. If you have older notes alongside other leftover travel currency such as Euros or Canadian Dollars, we can handle those too.

US Dollar Coins

We accept a wide range of US Dollar coins, including the Sacagawea Dollar and the Quarter, as well as Dimes, Nickels, Pennies, and commemorative issues. The exchange rate for coins is typically a little lower than for banknotes due to handling costs, but it is always worth including them rather than leaving them behind.

Why Exchange With Us?

American Dollar Exchange FAQ

Do you accept older US Dollar notes that look very different from modern ones?

Yes, we do. Unlike many other currencies, the US Federal Reserve has never demonetised older Dollar designs — they remain legal tender no matter how old or different they appear. We accept older series notes at our standard rate, though heavily worn or faded examples may be assessed at a slightly reduced rate.

Can I exchange a damaged $100 note with a tear or missing corner?

Yes, provided at least 50% of the note is intact and the serial number remains legible. The $100 note is one of the most commonly exchanged denominations we handle, so our team is well practised at assessing it. A slightly reduced rate may apply depending on the extent of the damage.

Is the $2 bill worth anything — can I exchange it?

Yes, the $2 note is genuine US legal tender and we exchange it at face value converted to sterling at our current rate. It is a curiosity that rarely circulates in everyday American life, but it is not a collector’s item and should simply be treated as a standard banknote. Just include it alongside your other Dollar notes when you post them in.

Do you accept Presidential Dollar coins and other commemorative US coins?

Yes! We accept a range of US Dollar coins including the George Washington Presidential Dollar and the Sacagawea Dollar, both of which UK travellers frequently bring back as loose change from a trip to the States. The exchange rate for coins is lower than for banknotes due to handling costs, but it is still worth sending them in rather than leaving them in a drawer.

How do I send my US Dollars to you, and when will I be paid?

Pack up your notes and coins and post them to us yourself using a method of your choosing. Given that the Dollar is the world’s most widely traded currency, we process it quickly — once received and verified, we will pay you within 5 working days by bank transfer or PayPal. If for any reason you are not happy with our offer, we will return your currency to you free of charge.
